About The Departments

Founded in 1962 the Department of English, a small yet robust department with five permanent faculty positions, has evolved and adapted to the change in curriculum since 2000. From teaching literary pieces the Department has transformed to teaching functional and communicative English for business purposes. The Department has a healthy ambience of academic pursuits, discussions and extends student support by taking supplementary lessons, developing language skills mentoring a healthy personality etc. Presently there are four permanent faculty members rendering their service to the Department in particular and to the college in general. Apart from the regular academic and research activities, the faculty members have been discharging certain other corporate, administrative, NSS and RUSA activities. Besides, the Department conducts Spoken English Classes for B.Com students. Various co-curricular and add-on activities undertaken by the Department for the benefit of students in recent times are listed below: 1. A talk on Managing Self delivered by Swapan Jyoti Sarma in December, 2021. 2. A workshop on How to Face an Interview in collaboration with Rotary Club Gauhati South in May, 2022. 3. A webinar on Careers in the Digital Age-- are we ready? In collaboration with Praxis Business School Foundation in May, 2022. 4. A discussion on Transaction between Cultures: the Business of Translation in collaboration with the Department of MIL moderated by Prof. Santanu Phukan in June, 2022. 5. A special talk on Yoga (with demonstration) in association with the Department of MIL and Gauhati Commerce College Yoga and Wellness Centrein June, 2022.
